Reflexology for Labour: Myths vs. Facts
Debunking the Myth: Reflexology for Labour – What It Really Does
Reflexology is often praised for its health benefits, especially during pregnancy and labour. However, misconceptions have led some to believe that reflexology is a quick fix for reducing labour pain or speeding up delivery. While reflexology can offer valuable support for pregnant women (check my previous post on reflexology for pregnancy here), it’s important to understand that it is not a substitute for medical care and it is not a magic cure for labour.
Myth vs. Reality
The myth that reflexology can ease labour pain, stimulate labour or shorten the process entirely is not supported by scientific evidence. The true benefit of reflexology lies in its ability to calm both the body and mind, helping women enter a more relaxed state as they prepare for birth.. Relaxation is key in helping women better manage the physical and emotional challenges of labour, creating a more supportive environment for the birthing process.
As women near their due date, a mix of excitement and nervousness often sets in, which can heighten anxiety and lead to muscle tension, particularly in the pelvic area. This tension, combined with the release of stress hormones like adrenaline, can interfere with the body’s ability to naturally progress into labour. When stress is high, the hypothalamus—the part of the brain responsible for signalling the production of oxytocin and endorphins—may delay the release of these vital birth hormones. Oxytocin, which triggers uterine contractions, can be suppressed by elevated stress hormones, potentially slowing the onset of labour. Relaxation is key—it allows the body to open up and release tension, this is where reflexology comes in!
In a relaxed state, muscle tension eases, allowing the body to send the right signals for labour to progress naturally. Reflexology supports this process by providing soothing touch and promoting a sense of well-being, helping women release tension and feel more prepared for the journey ahead.
What Reflexology Can Actually Do for Labour: The Evidence
Some studies have shown that reflexology may help pregnant women in the following ways:
1. Pain Management
Reflexology treatments throughout pregnancy may help women cope better with the pain of labour, especially during the first stage of labour. Research has shown some positive effects:
A 2010 study demonstrated that women who received frequent reflexology reported reduced pain intensity during labour compared to those who didn’t receive reflexology. However, pain relief was moderate, not a miracle solution.
2. Shortening Labour Duration
Reflexology may also help shorten the duration of labour, but this finding isn't consistent across all studies.
For instance, a 2003 study found that women who received reflexology had a shorter first stage of labour compared to the control group. But, as with many reflexology studies, more large-scale trials are needed to confirm this effect.
3. Stress and Anxiety Reduction
Reflexology seems to have a calming effect, helping to reduce stress and anxiety, which can have a significant impact on a woman’s labour experience.
A 2011 randomised controlled trial found that reflexology could reduce stress and anxiety levels during labour, helping women to feel more relaxed, which in turn can make contractions and pain more manageable.
